My column counterpart and friend of four years, Diane Glass, died today. This has been a very difficult month, as Diane only learned that she had cancer 5 weeks ago, and because the family wanted to respect her privacy, we couldn’t really share with others all that was going on. Even though those of us who cared about her were hurting with her, and her family. Yesterday, however, it became public knowledge, as her ‘farewell column’ ran in the AJC and dozens of other papers. (You can see that here: http://www.ajc.com/blogs/content/shared-blogs/ajc/woman/entries/2007/07/29/

The giant ICRS convention every year is one of the highlights of my year. It is when all the people in the Christian publishing world get together in one place and have a giant convention where all the publishers and other exhibiters show their new product line for the fall season. All the buyers come and walk around and look at what is coming out in the next few months to determine what is going to be at the top of their list or what they are going to promote to the consumer.

Family Life Podcast, ICRSThe ICRS show is also a time to see old friends and I love it for both of those reasons because it is also ... Read More »

Jeff and I dropped the kids off with their grandparents, my parents, and flew to Fresno, California in the middle of a heat wave. Fresno is in the desert in northern California and when we got off the plane, it was 111 degrees Fahrenheit! We went to this absolutely fabulous church called ‘The Well’ to do a relationship conference together.

The thing that was so cool about this Church is that the average age in this Church of over a thousand people is 25, which is so exciting to us because even though we are a few years older than that - Aha - actually more than a few years older than that, we hear all the time from people who hear the findings about how men are wired or about how the women are wired and they say “How we wish we had been able to hear this before we got married” or “I wish I’d learned this when I was dating.”

We have felt the same wa ... Read More »

This was one of the most fun weeks I have had as a public speaker. We had received an invitation for to speak to an annual event. Gulf Lake Ladies Days brings in around 3,000 women over the course of five days and gives them a ‘ladies day out’ at a beautiful lake in Michigan. My husband is from Michigan, so we thought that we could actually turn this into a chance for us as a family to see my husband’s family as well as speak to a fairly large group of women over the course of five days. This turned out to be a wonderful family and working vacation.

Gulf Lake is a community with a lot of vacation cottages. Residents live there part of the year, and it has a beautiful beach with boats and water activities. My kids loved getting on the sandy beach and building castles and canals and I had a lot of fun speaking to the women. One of the most special things for me was to be able to get some time to hang out wi ... Read More »

In celebration of the completion of For Parents Only our staff went to tea at our favorite tea house, Vintage Tea Room, where they serve the most delicious scones, clotted cream, and teas of every flavor possible.

Okay, so Saturday I got to the airport in Bangor, Maine to catch a flight connecting me to my next event, a Pastoral interview on Sunday morning at West Side Christian Church   worship services in Springfield, Illinois. The idea was that I was going to catch a flight to Detroit, connect through Detroit and catch another flight to Saint Louis, and then a sweet couple in the Church were going to pick me up in Saint Louis, and drive the one-and-a-half hours to the hotel in Springfield. It was going to be a bit of a long trip, and it would get me in to Saint Louis around 10:00 pm, which would get me in to Springfield, Illinois pretty close to midnight, and that would be 1:00 in the morning my time, but that was the only option to be able to make the Church Services.

Well, it didn’t go as planned because of unfortunately, I hate to say it, but just some sheer lack of skill by the airport staff in Bangor. They allowed al ... Read More »

This was one of the most exhausting travel adventures that I have had in the two-and-a -half years that I’ve been traveling above non-stop since the book “For Women Only” came out.  I should say it was a great weekend, but as you’ll read, very tiring. The adventure started on Friday morning, when I headed off to the airport to catch a flight to Bangor Maine. This was to do a Women’s Conference at Bangor ... Read More »

This weekend was an incredibly special one for me. I was invited by Denise, who is the President of Spring Hill Camp to come share at this weekend women’s retreat. Spring Hill Camp is normally  children’s camp with about 10,000 kids in the summer, but twice a year, on two weekends a year, they open it up for women’s retreat. Honestly I was expecting a little retreat center, maybe a few rustic cabins Instead, it is this massive kids camp with adventure courses, zip wires, kickball arenas, horseback riding and just about everything you can imagine that would make a kids camp a delight - and of course that made it pretty delightful for the women as well. But, one of the things that I found so special was that so many of the women this weekend really were so open to hear what I was trying to convey.

In fact, the morning after the first session, where I covered the subject of respect and how secretly ... Read More »

April 26th - 28th , 2007
This was the first stop on my four-day, three-city trip that was a whirlwind of activity. It was pretty tiring, but also pretty exhilarating because I got to speak to so many people in such a short period of time. April 26th, 2007 First Baptist Church of Paducah, Paducah, Kentucky
First, I flew to Nashville and someone was kind enough to pick me up and drive me to Paducah, Kentucky two hours away. Because I am on a deadline, trying to finish something for the preparatory discussion guide, I ended up working the whole way. I was hardly able to talk with the woman who was kind enough to drive me. The event that night was at Paducah, at the First Baptist Church of Paducah, and it was just a wonderful suite. It was a women’s night out, Spring Fling kind of event and it was just a lot of fun. 600 women came, paid $20 each to come and hear this discussion and I was just amazed that so many women would ... Today was a very interesting event! Almost a year ago, Mary Frances Bowley had invited me to be a part of a major event to introduce the work of Wellspring to the women of Atlanta. Wellspring was going to put on a big stadium event at the Georgia Dome that would really encourage women to step out and take a risk to do those things they felt they were being called to do by God. This event had quite a few well known speakers, and I was honored to be invited to be one of the people on the platform. I shared my story of how I came to be an author, and how I felt so strongly that I was supposed to write a book on a particular subject. I once felt certain that there was absolutely no way that I could ever accomplish getting published, yet I felt like I was being urged to just start something in the midst of my doubts and see that God would get the glory for His hand in my endeavors.

I have told the story before, and what happened is I was i ... Read More »
